Emma Smiling with Gratitude

I’m an 18-year-old freestyle skier on the BC Park Team. I earned my spot on the team after my coach recognized my dedication and strong results from the 2022-23 season. That year, my results left me ranked 2nd in BC for my age group and 6th overall. Unfortunately, I tore my ACL and meniscus in 2023, then re-injured my knee at my first comp back. Having two back-to-back knee injuries definitely tested me, but I've come out of it stronger and even more in love with skiing than before.

My goals are to qualify for the 2030 and 2034 Olympics and earn a spot on the Canadian National Team. I’m finally ready to return to competitions for the upcoming season. Due to my knee recovery, I’ve had to limit my schedule, but I’m still budgeting at least $40,000 for the season. Pursuing freestyle skiing at this level takes an enormous amount of time, commitment, and financial support. The costs go far beyond just skis and boots, there’s coaching, travel, accommodations, food, lift access, and more. Turning 18 this year has also meant higher lift ticket prices for both training days and competitions, which has only added to the overall cost of chasing this dream. While also studying interior design, I work as much as possible to support myself, but I know I can’t do it alone. I'm trying not to rely on my family this year, so any support, big or small, truly makes a difference.

Freestyle skiing is a huge part of my life. It’s taught me how to push through setbacks and stay grounded in what I love. I’m proud to represent this sport, and I’m beyond grateful for anyone who chooses to support me along the way. Thank you for being part of my journey.
